Feminist Critique

Women, Who Are they? What Are they? How can they? When can they?

Trying to answer it just by reading, you can guess the common answers.
The video clip above is from "The Devil Wear's Prada". I chose this video as an entrance to give you an idea of what women are portrayed today.

Oh! check the video below, I used to be like this, but then when I didn't get a huge house for my barbies, I started playing doctor with them, and you can only guess if they survived under my hands.

I just like to share that ;) But I do love Barbie, MyScene, Bratz Movies because they portray empowered women. They teach kids to never give up, and not to be afraid to dream.

And here's my old time fave movie starring Lindsay Lohan, "The Parent Trap" and "Matilda" :)

haha! enough about these! let's see the trailers of the upcoming films this year and see what are the roles of women in that particular film ;)

oh look! the trailer wouldn't be complete without a second peak on women objectified as sex objects (brava!) And I guess, Emily Blunt's role here stumbles on being a damsel in distress, and the love interest. (nice)

theres only one thing to say here.. "it's a man's world.."

this is interesting. Predictable really, i feel like seeing it before, but basically the images portrayed are "weak women" and who are "submissive".

OMG OMG! haha! Barbara Streisand, I love you, so natural. I can relate to the guy HAHA. Moms ROCK! although they do change from time to time ;)

She's beautiful even if she has a mental problem and her image is sorta grunge, emo, rocker, blunt, dark girl.

i just had to post this.

the next one is not new, though i'd like to watch it, and i like what Juno Temple said at the beginning of the trailer.

t'was a Man's world but it won't mean nothing, w/o a woman.

Mona Lisa Smile

So, Mona Lisa Smile shows the stereotypical women back in the 60's.
Back in our Broad Crit class, we discussed about "culture being created by different mix of other cultures that in time will be adapted as another culture" (e.g. sugar, milk, and coffee, are different cultures, mix 'em all together, you have another culture ;))

Storyline

Katherine Ann Watson has accepted a position teaching art history at the prestigious Wellesley College. Watson is a very modern woman, particularly for the 1950s, and has a passion not only for art but for her students. For the most part, the students all seem to be biding their time, waiting to find the right man to marry. The students are all very bright and Watson feels they are not reaching their potential. Altough a strong bond is formed between teacher and student, Watson's views are incompatible with the dominant culture of the college. Written by garykmcd

Did the stereotypical women views changed in the present?

Below is a video from Youtube, where it showcases British TV ads from the 60's - 70's. Women are always used in their ads some with that seductive romantic voice, but often women are representing household, housewife, gahhhhhhhhh annoying! haha watch it and you'd get what i mean!

You know, I'm a 60's fan, I love how conservative women are, and dresses like a barbie doll. But, I don't think that'll still suit our generation today ;)
we have evolved in time, and media showed representations of women on print and television. Women as I see it still lives in the ideology of Patriarchy. Although there are big developments happening for us women. These days, women tend to intimidate men.

Maybe this kind of intimidation? HAHAH! nahhh ;)

ManilArt2012

Hey! So I decided to post a Video Blog for Manila Art. Since that's how I did it back in 2010! :)
This year's Manila Art has been beautiful in my opinion. I feel so smart. Why? because I stand around each painting for more than 30minutes trying to figure out the message within the image that is shown! I feel I developed critique's eyes. Somehow one way or another, I can't seem to just stare at the artworks, mostly I would just think and think and think... I don't even like Art Exhibits before... but recently, I've been enjoying it ;)

Thank you Sir Rondina!

Cybercrime Prevention Law

DEAR PHILIPPINE GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS,

DO NOT FORGET THAT WE THE FILIPINO CITIZENS ARE YOUR BOSS. YOU SHOULD LISTEN TO WHAT WE STAND FOR. DO NOT PUT YOUR NAME IN SHAME, DO NOT LET ONE MISTAKE PULL YOU DOWN, YOUR PRIDE IS NOT NEEDED, ONLY YOUR OBEDIENCE TO THE PEOPLE YOU SERVE. I REPEAT "OBEDIENCE TO THE PEOPLE YOU SERVE". I AM NOT BLIND, NOR DEAF, I CAN SEE AND HEAR YOU.
THE INTERNET KEEPS ON GROWING, MORE AND MORE INDIVIDUALS LOG ON, AND YOU DONT EVEN HAVE THE MEANS TO PROMULGATE THIS LAW. YOU ARE WASTING 50MILLION PESOS? WHAT IF I TELL YOU, I DONT WANT TO WASTE MY MONEY ON THAT? I WANT YOU TO PUT THAT MONEY FOR EDUCATION.
WITH DUE RESPECT TO YOU, THERE ARE 70% WORTH OF FILIPINOS ON THIS SOCIAL NETWORKING SITE ALONE. TRUST ME WITH GOD'S BLESSING, THAT CAN PUT YOU DOWN TO THE PLACE WHERE YOU OUGHT TO BE.
...
ONE ADVICE, BECAUSE IM A RESPRESENTATIVE OF THE YOUTH, IF YOU CANNOT TRASH THE CYBERCRIME LAW, AMEND IT.

i am so full of this. this government makes me feel unworthy to live in this country.
So early in the morning, and i feel like bursting out in here...

sincerely,
@RoseAriane

What's Funny?

Stereotyped Gays, and Bumbays

Two of these videos illustrates How gays are. But is it really true?
Our Professor asked us to note what we laughed about. At first, I laughed about the song. Second, the outfits. Lastly, the gestures made. For me who has gay friends whom I respect, the video seemed offensive. Overrated, down right disrespectful. This judgement of gays leads most of them closeted, and it is a painful experience for them.

Gays are mostly judged because of their cross dressing. Because culture tells you that dresses are for girls. But they had enough of this and thought of a way, to again, surprise you. They continued to strive for their freedom, fought for equality and change the norm. Did they really? I hope so.

A week after September started, me and my bestfriend visited our friend's place. I got along with a new friend named "Mike", and yes, he's gay. I asked Mike one question that I always ask my gay friends of, "If you were to die, and chose to be anyone, would you be a girl or a boy?" and the answer would always surprise me.

"If I were to be born again, I won't choose to be either girl or boy, I WILL ALWAYS BE GAY, I can surpass everything, I can be both man and woman, I am going to be the improved version of male or female.." - Mike

Bumbays

Bitoy made Didjay Vidjay quite metaphorical. He enumerated all the stereotypical things culture has thought people of what Bumbay's/Muslim people are in the City, especially in the Philippines. Most pinoys would describe the bumbay's job as "hulugan". At pag may paparating na bumbay "ayan na si bumbay, maniningil na". Primarily sought as business people.
Again, my bestfriend is half pakistan-half filipino, and she gets annoyed when she gets compared with "bumbays". Not all of them have that job. and qoute "at least they have means of living, e yung iba?" instead of separating herself from them, she immediately defends them.

Not all is what it seems, but for what its worth, that's where the question rises, and answers are made to differ.

My Date with YOU

File:MyDateWithDrew.jpg

So first, Brian Herzlinger looks like a mash-up of,

ROBERT DOWNEY, JR.

COLLIN FARRELL

and WILL FERRELL

Second, I watched the film first than the trailer, so here's my reaction to the trailer...

image

image
To those who watched the film, you get it. I love you Brian, you have just become an inspirations, in the form of film creativity of course!

Anyways, before I get to the point, here's the Trailer >:)

and to spoil some readers, here's the ending (haha!) apparently, you can watch this on Youtube, so look it up! :)

Storyline

"If you don't take risks, you'll have a wasted soul." - Drew Barrymore. Ever since the second grade when he first saw her in E.T. The Extraterrestrial, Brian Herzlinger has had a crush on Drew Barrymore. Now, 20 years later he's decided to try to fulfill his lifelong dream by asking her for a date. There's one small problem: She's Drew Barrymore and he's, well, Brian Herzlinger, a broke 27-year-old aspiring filmmaker from New Jersey. But that doesn't stop Brian and his film school pals from doing everything they can think of to convince Barrymore to go out with him - and documenting their quest along the way. Equipped with a video camera they have to return to Circuit City in 30 days and the $1,100 Brian won on a game show (where the winning answer was, prophetically, "Drew Barrymore"), they've got one month to accomplish their mission... Written by Andrew Hindes

Third, given the chance to dream, I'd like to personally meet Robert Downey Jr. Ellen De Generes, Nick Jonas (i've seen Joe), Tim Burton (i'll complain about destroying my childhood memories HAHA), Anne Hathaway (for being the rockstar princess in wet socks), Mr. Bean, Zac Efron, The Beatles, Philip Philips, Nutella owner, Mark Zuckerburg (i demand a job! haha), Steven Spielberg, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, and endless names to mention, in person. I  can't decide on only one, but if I would like to mimic Brian I'd settle for Zac Efron. Speaking of Zac, he's coming to town by the end of the month, exciting.

Ideology

Someone, Something, tells you what reality is or something that becomes a NORM.
In this particular film, we see the ideology of what an ideal guy should be to date Drew Barrymore or the ideal girl.

below are images from GOOGLE when you search "Ideal Guy" and these are the things a girl does look for in a guy, which was constructed by media or told to them by the environment around them. Kinda like, saying "marry Ken.. or Batman"

hate to burst the heart bubbles in your head. There are no perfect men.
OH! actually, my head is constructed with my own Ideal guy. Below is just the least of them.
ian somerhalder body 2012Screening In StyleHola ZacZac Efron is ‘The Lucky One’Zac Efron Takes A Gamble

NEXT! the Ideal Girl.
okay, so my Ideal Girl.

anne hathaway

seems like I can only think of one asian girl :| anyways.
These are the ideological looks that I like or is a norm to me because it was implanted.
To be honest, I've grown up watching fairytales and love story films and that is one factor where some part of me would like to have a Happy Ever After. Just like Brian on My date with Drew, the film was constructed for Brian to have a happy ending. :)
